The Wreath of Khan part deux

Just a few quick items before the end of the year. My story "Green Eyes and Chili Dogs" has just been published in the Dark Moon Anthology, Vampires. I can't speak for the other stories in the collection, but I can guarantee that there is no sparkling in my vampire tale. Its an older story but hasn't been in print since 2005. Dark Moon also published my flash story "A Thoughtful Gift," in their flash anthology, Frightmares: A Fistful of Flash Fiction. Its a Christmas story. Sort of. Imagine It's a Wonderful Life meets Seven. Merry Christmas.

On a liter and goofier note, a while back I created a Wreath of Khan graphic to post on the Night of the Living Trekkies Face Book Page. I love to photoshop a good, or bad, pun between writing sessions, and well, someone saw the graphic, felt inspired and brought it to life, actually making a Wreath of Khan. This is Joe Regan's real life version of my graphic.

And if that isn't enough holiday nerdyness, the Geeks of Doom website posted about the Night of the Living Trekkies' holiday Wreaths. Love their site, and its always fun to be on it. Dark Moon Books has released FrightMares: A Fistful of Flash Fiction, which has my flash fiction piece "A Thoughtful Gift." It's a Christmas story. Well it takes place at Christmas. Dark Moon Books will also release Vampires, a collection of short stories about bloodsuckers. This anthology will feature my story "Green Eyes and Chili Dogs," one of my personal favorites.

Blogs. Are standard blogs going the way of Betamax, MySpace, and Charlie Sheen's career? I don't know, but if I had a nickle for every time I've blogged this year, I'd have enough to buy a cup of coffee...in the 1940s. Originally I started this blog to replace the news section on my web site to update my fans, all six of them, (Hi Dad!) Now it seems its just a source of neglect and quilt. I post news on Facebook and tell myself that I'll get around to blogging the news later. But later rarely comes, and I feel guilty for ignoring my blog which collects internet dust, like my hotmail email account. I wonder if that is still active.
Oh well, on to the news. AUDIO DRAMA: The folks at HG World, the Parsec Award winning audio drama series, produced an audio dramatization of Night of the Living Trekkies Chapter 4 The Cage. Its a lot of fun to listen too, and when I close my eyes I can see how incredible a movie version would be. A big thank you to Jay Smith for heading that up. He's a big fan of the book and good writer to boot. You can give it a listen here. NotLT Ch 4 "The Cage" MOVIE: In regards to a movie version of Night of the Living Trekkies, last I heard the most promising talks so far have recently broken off. What's that mean? What I think it means is that there has been lots of talk between studios, agents and publisher, but no deal thus far. Honestly, I thought a deal would be in the can and shooting to have begun by now. A few months back there was even a commitment from a well known (wish I could mention his name) Star Trek actor!!! I kept thinking, oh please let this work out so I could sneak onto the set and meet him.
ZOMBIE TREKKIES: I love NotLT fans. This October two fans went above and beyond. Jenna Carodiskey-Wiebe attended Geek Girl Con in Seattle wearing a stellar Zombie Trekkie outfit. Way to represent! Stephanie Naboshek has created a step by step guide on how to make your own Zombie Red Shirt Costume. Very Detailed, very geeky. Makes me wish I could sew. SPANISH EDITION: On October 5th the Spanish publisher Timus Mas released the Spanish Edition of Night of the Living Trekkies, and once again we have another great cover design. What I like about this one is it seems to be a mash up of the English cover and the award winning cover of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I don't know how well its doing, but I'm sure the cover will get folks attention.

KIZUNA: Fiction for Japan - Earlier this year I was invited to participate in a charity anthology to benefit those effected by the massive 9.0 earthquake in Japan. I'm one of 75 authors from 11 countries to donate a piece to this collection which was released this August. It's the first time I've been involved in a project like this and I look forward to doing more like it. The anthology is available on Amazon. Kizuna: Fiction for Japan

SHORT STORIES: I have a few short stories coming out in two new anthologies possibly this year. I would say check this blog in the future for more info, but I have no idea when or what has to happen to motivate me to keep blogging. Infecting Germany

The German edition of Night of the Living Trekkies, "Die Nacht der lebenden Trekkies" was released this month from Heyne Publishing. It's in paperback form with a redesigned cover and I have to say, its simple but to the point. If the ranking on Amazon is any indication, and every professional writer I have ever met says "No it is NOT an indication," then it seems to be off to a great start. There should be a Spanish version coming soon.

Public Libraries - They let everybody in

In the past few months Night of the Living Trekkies has been nominated for a few awards. Back in February the site Mail Order Zombie nominated it for a Dead Letter Award for best zombie novel 2010. It fell short and the award went to Jonathan Maberry’s YA horror novel, Rot. Then in that same month the trailer for NotLT was awarded Best Viral Star Trek Video 2010 by TrekMovie.com. And in June the trailer was nominated for a Moby, but the Best Small House Trailer Moby went to Tree of Codes by Jonathan Safran Foer. Then a day later the fans at Fourth Day Universe awarded Night of the Living Trekkies the Uni for Best Zombie Novel 2010. Sooooo… you win some, you loose some. It’s just fantastic to know that the novel is getting read, and received well. And in just a few weeks the German edition will hit bookshelves in Berlin and begin the infection in Europe.

Speaking of Europe, Night of the Living Trekkies Super fan, Spritt Schapiro paid tribute to the novel by dressing up as a Zombie Trekkies at the Copenhagen Zombie Crawl, 2011.

New Genre Review Program on PBS

Levar Burton, Next Generation’s Geordi Laforge and host of the long running PBS show Reading Rainbow, will once again host a show on the Public Broadcasting Network. Rainbow of the Living Dead will premiere this fall rolling out interviews with Max Brooks, George A. Romero …. Yeah, no, not really. But file it under, wouldn't it be cool.

Brent Mills, editor of Kizuna: fiction for Japan, has let me know that two of my flash fiction pieces will appear in the charity anthology, Homecare and The X-Ray. All proceeds will go to Japan relief efforts via the Red Cross. Its nice to know that even my most dark and twisted thoughts set down into a fast narrative, can do some good.

I just got a few copies of Murky Depths' 16th issue and it looks great. Its a mix of graphic art and fiction, put together very well. I'm proud that this UK magazine has included my story Momentum, in this issue. Even though I penned this one five years ago, its the first time it's been in print, and its about bloody time.

Need to get back to it. Fly low and avoid the radar.

Recently Suvudu, a genre site created by Random House, Inc., to provide additional content, such as author interviews, chats, chapter previews, reviews, previews, and news around science fiction, fantasy, books published by Random House, asked me to take part in their ongoing author blog series, "Take Five." Kevin David Anderson is the contributor for this week’s Take Five, a regular series where we ask authors to share five facts about their latest books. His latest novel, Night of the Living Trekkies ...

1. The idea for Night of the Living Trekkies came to me while watching the brilliant documentary, Trekkies. Directed by Roger Nygard and staring Denise Crosby, it’s an in-depth and entertaining exploration of the devoted fans of Star Trek and their world, from home life to conventions. I was not even halfway through the film when it hit me. I kept imagining, in the right situation, under the right dire circumstances, these guys can become the heroes. And of course the right situation was the zombie apocalypse.

2. I almost shelved the idea several times, doubting that any publisher would even consider the idea. The potential legal wrangling that the parody manuscript might get caught up in was daunting. In the late eighties at least one Star Trek parody book project that I know of, was killed, and the difficulties that plagued the filmmakers of the movie Free Enterprise, when attempting to insert Star Trek visuals into the film, were always paramount in my mind. But one day, think it was late in 2008, I was listening to one of my favorite NPR radio show, Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, when a trivia question came up involving some crazy book in which they were putting zombies in a Jane Austen novel. I remember the audience and the show’s host, Peter Sagal, having a good laugh at the not yet released New York Times Best Seller. But I didn’t laugh. Well, okay I did, a little, but only because I realized how brilliant the concept was. I knew then that there was at least one publisher, Quirk Books, that could think way outside the literary box. The novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies inspired me to continue work on Night of the Living Trekkies, and coincidentally the manuscript landed on the desk of the very same editor responsible for our current trend of literary mash-ups, PP&Z’s creator and editor, Jason Rekulak.

3. Before pitching the idea to Quirk Books, I lived in a constant state of paranoia, that some other author would beat me to the punch. I thought the idea of combining zombies with Trekkies at a sci-fi convention was like death and taxes. It was inevitable. And if I didn’t do it someone else certainly would. I told almost no-one what I was working on until it was in the hands of a publisher. For almost a year, the first rule of Night of the Living Trekkies was, don’t talk about Night of the Living Trekkies. Now I just think I was paranoid. Or nuts. Or both.

4. There were many excellent revisions to the characters from my first draft. George Takei, (the actor who played Mr. Sulu in the original series and the movies) or at least my interpretation of him, was actually written into several scenes. There were some good moments with him, his foil, battling zombies, but in the end, Takei’s scenes were cut. With the real possibility that the owners of the Star Trek property might have issues with our little parody novel, why push it. One of the best changes made was the redrafting of Leia from the original idea, a high priced Sci-Fi prostitute, to that of a Sci-Fi convention model. Why was this done? Well, when you’re asking your audience to suspend some belief in order for them to accept things like, the living dead, it’s best to make the situations and characters as real as possible. It’s amusing to think that there might be Sci-Fi ladies of the evening, mixing cosplay and prostitution. But it does sound a little far fetched, whereas if you’ve ever been to ComicCon or anything like it, you know that there are plenty of real world Sci-Fi convention models brightening up the booths, our nerdy fantasies, and exciting our geeky hearts.

5. Many of the character names were nods to Star Trek characters. Some were obvious, like Jim Pike, but others required some deep Trek knowledge. And one character name, Eli Sandoval, actually hinted at the ending.

So what’s going on you ask. Well, Night of the Living Trekkies is up for a Dead Letter Award over at the Mail Order Zombie website. TrekMovie.com awarded the book trailer for Night of the Living Trekkies the Best Overall Star Trek Viral Video – 2010. There are some great videos posted on the their site, including one of my favorites from last year which won Best Original Star Trek Song, "Star Trek Girl" by Meekakitty. The macabre and hilarious Jeff Strand (Dweller, Benjamin's Parasite, Single White Psychopath Seeks Same) is conducting Zombie Wars on his web site, in which he compares excellent zombie novels with his brilliant novel The Sinister Mr. Corpse. In round two we have Mr. Corpse vs. Night of the Living Trekkies. It’s a fun read and if you like dark horror comedy, and don’t know Jeff Strand, let me just say, get to know him!

For the past few weeks we have been running caption contests over at the Night of the Living Trekkies Facebook page, and I must admit the creativity and geek knowledge of those that have played is "Most Impressive!" We’ll keep them going until I run out of prizes and or people get bored of it. With that in mind I’d like to incorporate a rule or two:
1) The caption with the most “Likes” at the end of 24 hours is the winner.
2) In order for your caption to be eligible the author must vote for one other caption – not their own.
3) In the event of a tie I'll toss out votes in which the author voted for their own. If after that a tie still exists, then the two authors will be asked to settle it amongst themselves on the field of honor with bat'leths. Or I’ll just give them both prizes.

In other news, looks like my short story Momentum will be out this Fall in the August issue of Murky Depths and not the Spring issue. Still excited to see it. I have not seen a short story of mine in a magazine for a while, and its time I work on that.

Had a fantastic time playing and recording a trivia game for Fan Central Fancast, which will air next week on BlogTalk Radio sometime - Feb 9th, I think. Brian K and Trekkie Kim are the hosts and they're more fun then fiberglass underwear. I don't think I embarrassed myself too badly, but there were a few Trek questions I should have known, and I had to hang my head in shame.

I like to photoshop in between rounds of writing, drinking coffee, and hunting mimes. It gets the creative juices going and in the case of the above: "Starfleet Scooby," lets me workout mashup ideas that are not quite big enough to fill a novel. I did this back in December and recently its been popping up on blogs, Facebook, tweets and wherever people are interwebbin'. <--- It could be a word.

To answer a few question I've been getting via email almost weekly, 1) No time frame yet on a Night of the Living Trekkies sequel and 2) Film rights have been nibbled at but are still available. I hope to know more on both of those in the next six months. How frakin' epic would a Night of the Living Trekkies movie be? The Trekkies Book Trailer kind of answers that question.

In movie news, looks like the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie is a go again. Seems like its been up and down, but now appears to be full speed ahead. We should see Zombieland 2 this year which I'm really looking forward too. Max Brooks WWZ might actually go into production this year. That's a big "might." I recently reread the novel and was reminded at what a challenging book it is to adapt. And if your looking for a good new ZombComedy to sink your teeth into, take a look at Doghouse. The editor of Fangoria, during one of his ZomBcon panels, couldn't say enough nice things about Doghouse and after watching it on DVD, twice, I have to agree.

More writing stuff ----> I'm excited about the Spring issue of Murky Depths which will have my short story "Momentum," amongst its dark pages. The story has never been in print and was the first piece of mine produced in audio for the amazing podcast, the Drabblecast. Also excited about the German version release of Trekkies, later this summer. We might also see the Spanish version available in the fall.

Thinking about jumping into the e-publishing game with a small collection of short stories. Just thinking about it. From what I hear its a lot of work, with not much to gain. I have a handful of short stories that were produced in audio but never appeared in print, and or e-print. They all need editing, rewriting, then more editing. It might make an interesting in between novels project. And , no this would not be the cover. Just more photoshopin'.

Princess Leia from Night of the Living Trekkies

Night of the Living Trekkie fan and artist, David Naughton-Shires, produced this amazing image of Leia, our six foot tall, Star Wars quoting heroine from Night of the Living Trekkies.

Here is a little bit about David:

Within hours of David Naughton-Shires birth his parents found a crayon in his hand and from that point forward the world would never be the same. David, the family man is the proud father of three wonderful children and shares his love and passion for art with his beautiful wife. Authors from around the world have taken notice of David’s creative genius and contracted with him to provide original cover art for their novels.

Not a one dimensional man, when he is not working as an Event Planner or in the world of security, he follows his other interests which include photography and writing. David is an avid reader of multiple genres and a fan of the great Super Hero Batman. David is a master at his craft and longs for a successful career change to work as an illustrator full time.

Zombiepalooza! ZomBcon 2010

ZomBcon was not only the first event centered solely on zombie culture, but an amazing gathering of horror icons. George A Romero, Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, the ladies of Evil Dead, actors from Day of the Dead, and Dawn of the – basically any really memorable movie made in the 70’s or 80’s with the word “Dead” in the title was represented. A real Halloween treat not just for zombie fans but for horror geeks of all kinds.
Just a few highlights:
• Kick off event was an 80’s styled prom, where only the dead danced at the Prom Night of the Living Dead. Molly Ringwald and Ducky were not in attendance.
• Max Brooks gave an entertaining and informative Zombie Survival seminar followed by Roger Ma’s Zombie Combat training – we all left informed and better prepared for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
• Bruce Campbell conducted a mass wedding of the dead – allowing dozens of zombie couples to renew their vows so their love may continue into the rotting hereafter.

• Malcolm McDowell hosted a Zombie vs, Trekkies Family Feud on the main stage which brought the house down.
• Amazing panels like Zombies & Why We Love Them, Mash Up Literature, and so much more.
• Fantastic items for sale like Zombie Flesh Jerky. Available in spicy and mild. There was even a vegetarian version, although I can’t imagine why.
• But best of all - George A. Romero, a gracious and warm human being that spent hours of his time meeting everyone that wanted to shake his hand.

Besides meeting Mr. Romero, and fans of Night of the Living Trekkies, I most enjoyed the humor and creativity of the conventioneers that went all out in making their costumes. There was Zombie Robin Hood, Zombie Snow White, Zombie Gumby, Zombie Spock, Zombie Red-Shirts, Zomb-BEES (hilarious) and some costume contest winners Zombie Luke Skywalker and Zombie Han Solo.

Zombie fans are simply AWESOME!

A few other things have been happening lately that I should mention. My Story "Momentum" will finally see its day in print in the UK magazine Murky Depths. The story has never been in print but it was the first story of mine to be heard on my favorite podcast – The Drabblecast. (Momentum DC Episode #23) Speaking of the Drabblecast, writer D.K. Thompson and I got together to pen a two part episode for the Drabblecast's Halloween show this year. Its a fun sci-fi, horror mashup that continues a sci-fi film from the 70's that I think was ahead of its time.

Last Saturday I finished up the first of two BORDERS’ Night of the Living Trekkies book signing in Southern California, and I learned that the only thing I like more than writing about a zombie outbreak at a Star Trek convention is meeting people who love to READ about a zombie outbreak at a Star Trek convention. Talking zombies, Star Trek and Sci-fi with people that live eat and breathe those genres is more fun than a Klingon Feast, or even tribble lined underwear. I got a dozen suggestions for sequel titles, scenarios, new characters, and a lot of urging for the follow up to have more Star Wars!

Questions ranged from, did we research everything or were we fanboys enough to know what a Lurpa was, to did Elvis Borgsley survive? But I think that the most common question I got over and over was, when is the movie coming out?!. With at least half of the folks that stopped by first having heard of Night of the Living Trekkies because of the amazing book trailer that debuted on YouTube in September, there seemed to be a lot of interest in seeing Trekkies on the big screen. Some even gave me actor suggestions as if Sam or I would be in charge of casting the film. So on that note, if you were in charge of casting for Night of the Living Trekkies, who would you want to play, Jim, Rayna, and the rest of the crew?

The first of two book signings in Southern Ca. is coming up - This Saturday, October 16th at the BORDERS in Mira Loma, beginning at 2pm. I visited the story today and was very impressed. There is Night of the Living Trekkies promotional posters up, and an entire end-cap dedicated to Quirk's latest mash-up novel. It's also in a beautiful location and my son really enjoyed the Toys R'us outlet store next door. And truth be told, so did I.

After looking at my picture in the NC Times I really wished I’d spend the $60 it would have cost to get a professional head shot taken. My wife says I’m a cheap bastard, but I prefer the term “thrifty” – derived from the name of the Roman Emperor, Thrifticus Maximus, who of course was a cheap bastard.

I’m extremely excited about the Book Trailer coming out in a week or so. Yes, Book Trailer! Quirk Books has done an amazing job with these trailers, my favorite being the one for Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.

Quirk is also running a contest for Night of The Living Trekkies. You can read all about it here, but basically if you hit the “LIKE” button on the NotLT Facebook page, you will be entered to win.

There has been some talk about book signings for Trekkies in October at a few Borders in Southern Cal, but nothing nailed down yet. Also it seems I may be going, with my co-author Sam Stall, to the first ever all-zombie convention, Zombcon, in Seattle, this Halloween weekend. But again, not nailed down yet. I’m not sure what Sam and I will be doing, but rumor has it that there is a Zombie vs. Trekkies Family Feud hosted by Malcolm Mcdowell, in the works.

Since most Zombies don’t talk I’m thinking the odds are tipped in the Trekkies' favor.

Anyway, trying really hard to ignore all of this and focus on finishing a new novel. Really need to just chain myself to a desk, and not get up until it’s done. Okay, back to the grindstone.

Trekkies is on the shelves. At Barnes and Noble you can find it in the New Science Fiction section, top shelf. There is a nice review of Night of the Living Trekkies up on Amazon, and here is another great review from The Necromancer Bog.

Promotions will be starting soon, some interviews being scheduled including one for my alma mater for Fresno State Magazine. There has been some talk about a few more signings and events, but nothing nailed down yet. In the meantime I'm doing my best to ignore all that and stay focused, and write. Currently I'm polishing the first draft of a new zombie novel proposal which I think, like Trekkies, will have a new spin on the genre. I'm in the middle of a rewrite of a YA novel based on some insightful suggestions from my agent, and I'm waiting to hear back on my Pseudopod submission, which I'd love to hear them produce. I haven't been on the pod since 2008 with Blood, Gridlock and PEZ - the short story that got me thinking about putting geeks up against some kind of horror scenario, the end result of which is Night of the Living Trekkies. I'm struggling to get a submission into The Drabblecast, my favorite fiction podcast, but can't seem to hit the flash fiction word count anymore.

Summer is coming to an end and don't tell my kids, but I'm so glad school starts next week. More time to write. You stay at home parents/writers, know what I'm taking about.

My first Mind Meld!

My head is still spinning from Comic Con. What an amazing, wild, strange, bizarre, and inspiring event. Not only did we hold the first book signing for Night of the Living Trekkies, but I got to meet a lot of wonderful people. I met my editor face-to-face for the first time, Jason Rekulac, the creator of Quirk Classics and the idea man behind Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Brett Cohen, VP of Marketing at Quirk Books, the people putting on ZomBcon in Seattle this Halloween weekend, Johnathan London from the Geekscape podcast, and lots of folks during the signing who loved talking zombies and Star Trek. My two favorite subjects.

Victory and Failure

Victory because I finished the first draft of a short story this morning. Failure because I sat down to write something in the flash fiction category for a market like The Drabblecast and it ended up being 5,000 plus words. I don’t think I’m ever gonna get that brevity back – that ability to tell a good and satisfying story with an economy of words. Maybe I should stop trying.

Well anyway, a first draft is done and now its time to put it away and let it simmer for a month or two. Cook on its own, let it develop beyond my preconceived notions of what it’s suppose to be. When I come back to it, with fresh eyes, I can focus on what I actually wrote and not what I tried to write. It’s a process. Forget what you expect and fine tune what you have. Hopefully there is enough good stuff on the page, between what you wanted and what’s really there, to mold it into something worth reading.

Submitted a few reprints the other day. Something I have not done in a while. I have some unpublished short stories but as I read through some of them, it’s pretty clear why they didn’t get published. Kind of reminds me of those commercials you see every once in a while for an album or collection by an aging or pasted away musician, claiming to contain previously unreleased tracks / songs. And when you get the opportunity to listen to some of those previously unreleased titles, it doesn’t take but a few moments to hear why they have gone unreleased. A turd is a turd no mater how you package it. We all create them. I guess the trick is to know the difference.

I Grok William Shatner

Remember the first time you saw or heard William Shatner’s rendition of Rocket Man? If your initial thought was, “The man is brilliant!” then, most likely, you were drunk or high. But if you weren’t, then, like me, you are an unquestioning, devoted fan of the man who brought to life the greatest Starfleet Captain of all time – James Tiberius Kirk. Great White North born William Alan Shatner is my favorite celebrity (living or dead), and is simply the finest contribution Canada has made to the pop culture continuum.

Whenever I’m faced with a difficult decision, a fork in the road, I often ask myself, “What would Shatner do?” I let my ego take over, my smugness rises to the surface, and the answer always comes to me. My wife usually slaps me if I try to act on the Shatneresq-decision, prompting me to do the right thing, but that’s not the point. My heart and moral compass are always pointed at due Shatner, and if yours is too then I have a few books you might enjoy. Got a little bit of everything here: an autobiography, non-fiction, and some bizarre fiction - something for the Shatner in all of us.

Get A Life (Atria 1999) this is an autobiographical account of Shatner’s quest to better understand the menagerie of Trekkie conventions that he is so much apart of. Published back in 1999, the title “Get a Life,” is taken from the now infamous 1986 SNL sketch which shows Shatner berating Trekkies at a Star Trek convention, somewhat harshly, but extremely funny. He talks about the popular sketch in the book, and its reaction in the fan community, but the bulk of the book is dedicated to everything you wanted to know about Star Trek conventions. Shatner spent a great deal of time researching, even mixed with fans incognito (wearing a rubber alien mask) to gather unrestrained info from conventioneers, dealers and to really get to know the fans, that he admits he’s always maintained some distance. My favorite parts were the chapters on the history of the Star Trek conventions, and the real life Mission Impossible-styled attempts to keep the show alive after the initial cancellation. Shatner interviews the daring and brave souls who came together to put on the first all trek event, boldly going where no convention had gone before.

The Encyclopedia Shatnerica: An A to Z Guide to the Man and His Universe (Quirk Books 2008) Even though he is my favorite celebrity it just isn’t possible to know ever detail of a man whose career can only be described as epic. He’s an Actor, singer, director, novelist, horseman, game-show host, spoken-word performer – interstellar babes want him, Klingons fear him. Is there anything William Shatner can't do? Absolutely not. Don’t even entertain such thoughts. New York based author, Robert Schnakenberg chronicles Shatner’s numerous adventures, exploits and contributions to man-kind in shatnerific detail, scholarly reverence, and in alphabetical order. This is a reference book like no other, and mandatory reading for true followers of Shatnerology.

Shatnerquake (Eraserhead Press 2009) When zealot Bruce Campbell fans (Campbellians) set off a fiction bomb at the first ever ShatnerCON, all the charectors portrayed by Shatner come to life, with one mission. Kill William Shatner! Bizarro author Jeff Burk, creates a surreal world where TJ Hooker, Captain Kirk, and Priceline-Shatner all come together in a gory zombie-esq riot of cataclysmic proportion. Overflowing with pop culture references, that don’t pander to the uninitiated, Shatnerquake was the most fun and entertaining reading experience I’ve had in ten years. I am hoping for a sequel.

There are a few more Shatner / Trek Universe books out there I haven’t gotten too yet, and if you have already read some of these let me know which ones are worth the gold pressed latinum, and any recommendations you have.

Switching Gears

I sat down this morning determined to write a short story, (or at least start one) something I have not really done, with serious effort, in almost two years. The last few years have been filled with longer novel length projects. With a novel on its way to the printer, a proposal under consideration, and a rough draft of a new novel on its way to some first time readers, I thought I'd switch gears and write a short piece that I've wanted to get to since last summer. Although I've been thinking about this story for a long time, the blank page just stared up at me - mockingly. Ha, ha, its been two hours and you have written diddly squat! Its not that I didn't write anything, its just that it was harder than I thought to think in terms of shorter, less details, and no subplots. I'd get a few paragraph in and think, oh, this will be a nice direction and add details that would develop the characters. But then I'd realize that none of it moved the plot forward. All fine and dandy for a novel, but boring as hell in a short story. At least the short stories I like to read. After four hours of working I got almost twp pages. Pathetic! But I think I successfully, for the most part, switched gears, and should be on track the next time I sit down. If not, maybe I'll just fine a nice comforatable subplot, and go with it.

Rejections come and rejections go, but this one will be with be a while. Finally got a desicion from Andramada Spaceways Magazine about a submission they have had for 5 months. After making it through several rounds here is what they sent me:

our policy to hold onto a story indefinitely. Much as we'd
like to, we just don't have the room to print all the stories

Kevin Anderson is no more

Sad but true. (not really) I'm being replaced by the new and improved Kevin "David" Anderson. It's not that much of a change but it does have that new by-line smell. For reasons that will be clear soon I have had to make the change to avoid consumer confusion. So from now and for the publishable future I will be Kevin David Anderson.

It's going to take a little getting used to, as the only one who ever called me Kevin David Anderson, was my mom, and it usually meant I was in trouble.

In Short Story news my humorous fantasy story “Fear Factor” has made it to the final round of reading at Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, a Sci-Fi and Fantasy publication produced in Australia. Not to excited about this as I have yet to ever have a story make it into print if the selection process involves multiple rounds of reading. It’s happened to me at least a dozen times. I have the same luck with job interviews. In the last three years I’ve been the prospective employer’s number 2 candidate, at least five times. Which is fine, just that there is no paycheck for number 2, just a lot of interviewing, hand shaking, and fake smiling.

My web site will have a new look very soon. It’s all done really (except for the name changing in the header) and I’m just awaiting the green light. It will look much like the redesign of my blog – which I have to change the name as well.

A Little Bit of Success

Started reading Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, and tell me if you disagree, but the first 70 pages reads exactly like the first 70 pages of the Da Vinci Code. All the plot points and characters are there, he just changed their sex, age, race, locations and so forth. I assume the story will divert from the Code at some point, maybe that is what he’s doing, making us think we ….. oh, hell if I was Dan Brown and had written one of the most successful thrillers of all time, I’d just rewrite it too.

The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine has accepted a short story of mine titled, "The Day Hypnotism Died." Its one I've been tinkering with for a couple of years. Originally it was suppose to be a horror piece but it kept gravitating towards dark fantasy, which is probably a better description. Anyway, not sure when it will be podcasted but looking forward to it. Rish and Big always do a great job with their material, and they have assembled a really outstanding ensemble cast of voice talent and producers. So should be good.

Sniplits purchased another story of mine (my second with them). It’s a little twisted Zombie piece called, "Collections." Not sure when this one will be produced but based on the top-notch job they did on my fantasy story, "Fear Factor," I'm really looking forward to this one.

The Young Literature Review is holding a story of mine for a 2nd read. They said they'd let me know by the end of October and if they accept it will be my first published Children’s Story! Anyway, talons crossed.

DUMBEST SHOW EVER!!!!

In order to enjoy the SciFi Channel’s Ghost Hunters, you must first, put your critical thinking, reasoning, skepticism, heck, just give yourself an intelligence lobotomy, and maybe this show will do it for you. But even a lobotomized troglodyte would still stare blankly at the screen and mumble, “What the hell?”

Imagine taking a couple of characters from that reality show in which they sit in a garage all day and build motorcycles, take two of those guys, give them some night vision cameras and a convoy of jet black SUVs (Just like the Evil storm chasers had in Twister) and tell them to go hunt ghosts.

So we have a show where the Skipper and his Little buddy (The Ghost Hunters) have spooky conversations like- “Dude, I totally saw something over there.”
“No, way.”
“Way.”
Does the audience ever get to see what they see? No, all they show us is these two yahoos reacting to all this stuff they claim they are seeing. This isn’t Reality TV, its Remedial TV. The SciFi network should be completely embarrassed putting out this crap. And I’m sure they are,… all the way to the bank.

I don’t know whether or not ghosts exist, but I have to imagine that somewhere out there we have better qualified, educated, and more articulate people on the job looking into it, than Scooby and Shaggy here.

The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine is running an episode with 3 stories this week for their Broken Mirror Event. Its the first of two Broken Mirror episodes and my story/poem/limerick, not sure what it is, kicks it off. Personally I'd rather listen to the episode then read The Return. Over the last two years listing to my stuff on Psuedopod, Drabblecast, Well Told Tales, Sniplits, etc, I've come to the very honest conclusion that I think my stuff sounds much better than it reads. And besides, its harder seeing all my typos when you're listening.

My ZomCom Novel - I've got 90% of my first round reader's comments back and I'm overwhelmed, with how insightful, and unbelievably positive they are. My group of readers are by far the most diverse group I've ever had and the response has been, well the best response I've had to anything I've written. Many in the group are not fans of horror or genre fiction but all seem to extremely enjoy the book. It's such a silly premise, but I'm beginning to wonder if it might have mass market appeal.

...and having a strangely difficult time rejoining the HWA (Horror Writers Association). No answer to emails but they took my application fee just fine. I've never known them to be this unresponsive.

Finally, finally - THE END-

After sitting down to write what I assumed was a novella, a fast 20,000 word story that I'd have done in about 3-6 months, I was dismayed to learn that my fast easy little zombie project was a novel. So almost a year after typing the opening sentence, 300 pages, and 62 thousand words later I was finally able to type the words THE END. Draft number one is in the can, and after some clean up, I'll be sending it off to my beta readers. I had hoped that it would be fun summer reading for my reading volunteers, but the kids are back in school and it feels like summer is pretty much gone. But hey, it's a big planet, I'm sure it's summer somewhere.

In other short story news, one of my short tales (written back in 2004) will be apart of a live 2 hour Halloween radio show, broadcast this Halloween. Here is the blurb from the producer:

It was produced last year, voiced by Malcolm Rothman, who did one of the best readings of any of my stories. I don't mind saying that I was stunned. Somebody actually read my stuff. And they think I am well known enough to be an embarrassment to other writers. Wow. But on the down side, he was being pretty harsh about my writing skills, so that's kind of negative. I wondered if I should write the guy back, find out what he really meant by "Please stop writing," which seemed a very sincere request, not to mention polite. He did say please.

Well I will say I'm impressed by a personal reply. I bought "the edge of the world" (or something close, I don't have it with me)because I was entrigued by the title, as I wrote a song with a similar title a few years ago, and I love Sci Fi and a good adventure story. But I must say it just seemed like really lazy writing. There were the Christians, Muslims, and the Jews Fighting it out in Jerusalem (I mean the Tierrans, Urabans, and the Saedreans fighting it out in "ishsalem". I mean really, with the creativity you show in parts of the story, I'm sure you could be a little more creative in the names)The real story of Jerusalem is facinating enough, so do the research and write that amazing story! Keeping the stereotypes with barely disguised name changes just felt so contrived and really ruined the story for me. So there it is...but you still got the money, so here's to good marketing! Good luck and continued success.

Missed my own Deadline

Well I missed my self imposed deadline for my Zom-Com novella, which is on its way to becoming a Novel. Most definitions cut off the word count for a novella at 40,00 and I'm already at 46,000. Novel or Novella I wanted to have draft number one done by the end of June, but its looking more like first of August. For my beta readers who signed on to read in June, I apologize, and I hope you can still read in August. If not I understand.

My wife is doing a brilliant job of reading as I write, adding input that is definitely making it stronger. I feel pretty good in my ability to write action, dialogue, and keep a story moving, but sometimes I get way to focused on those things and I forget to develop the characters. My wife is a MFT, therapist, and can easily spot when a character is not acting true to life, not exhibiting the appropriate emotional response, or just plain turning into a robot.

On the short story front I recently sold a short story to a new magazine coming out in August. It's a reprint, so I'm kind of excited about it but not ecstatic. It's the only thing I've sold in 2009 so far and none of my new stuff is getting picked up. Withersin Magazine held a story of mine for a second read, but in the end it did not make the cut. In the last month I've gotten rejections from Podcastle, Psuedopod, Flash Me Mag, Nossa Morte, Fantasy Magazine, and I've had stories with Brutarian and Murky Depths since the beginning of the year and neither are responding to queries. Anybody know if those last two are still kicking?

When not writing I read, and I recently finished Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking. Very funny, extremely blunt, and full of odd trivia - Did you know Cary Grant took LSD? Currently I'm reading William Shatner's Get a Life. Its a kind of history of Star Trek conventions and his journey to get to know and understand Trekkies, and or Trekkers. I'm about halfway through and really enjoying the read, and I'm beginning to come to terms with the fact that I'm a bigger Trekkie than I ever realized. But that's okay, becouse it would seem, as luck would have it, that I am married to one. My wife and I recently had a heated discussion about who is the best Captain in Star Fleet. I'm on the Kirk side of the argument, she is for Jean Luc Picard, all the way. I see her points, but my problem with Picard is that Patrick Stewart is just to fine an actor. He just dosen't have any Shatnerness.

Oh well, when not writing or reading, I've been re-watching my favorite Zom-Coms for inspiration - Dead and Breakfast, Boy Eats Girl, Undead or Alive, Fido, Dead Meat, Black Sheep, Return of the Living Dead I and II, Dance of the Dead, Night of the Living Dorks - I've pretty much seen them all, but if you have any recommendations please send them on over.

The Youthful Face of Unemployment

Today's Press Enterprise (main newspaper in the Inland Empire, Ca) is running my essay (Op-Ed piece) in the opinion section. Originally titled The Youthful Face of Unemployment, the editors changed it to Tattoos Torpedo Job Interviews. The new title is more to the point, which is what an opinion piece needs to be, and I guess its the fiction writer in me that keeps trying to create mystery with titles, the exact opposite of what a newspaper whats to do. Its hard to switch gears sometimes. But I was a bit curious why they removed a paragraph with statistics from a source that gave support to my position. I can only conclude that an opinion editorial needs to be just that, opinion, not facts. Too many facts and it sounds to much like a news story.

Not sure if this is something to worry about, but the subjects of my essays, may indicate that I am in danger of becoming (or I am already) a grumpy old man. My last essay, Put down the phone and be a parent criticized young parents for being over involved in cell technology and ignoring their children. Kind of a grumpy old man point of view. Oh, well. Change happens. We grow, we learn, we age, and some of us become grumpy in the process.

There is a typo in this mornings Tattoo essay (first person to catch it gets a cookie) Even professional Copy Editors are human. And here is the missing paragraph from the Tattoo piece. Still not sure why they cut it.

But it is reversible, and when done, has measurable results. Clinic Officials at a North Hollywood Medical Clinic, offering laser tattoo removal, recently reported that 80% of those that have tattoos removed were able to get better jobs and were more likely to receive promotions at current jobs.

Popping Kernels

I got some nice news this morning in an email from Withersin Magazine. My Flash Fiction story - its about 1600 words - is being held for a second read. Not a home run, but I'm on base, and looking to steal. WM will make their final decision by mid June, and if I make it in, it will be my second appearance in the magazine. They ran my story "Liberation," in 2008, with some outstanding, and creepy artwork by B.A. Bosaiya. If you haven't picked up a copy of WM, its worth checking out. It's one of the most intelligent Speculative Fiction magazines in the small press today.

In other news - I've recently tried to increase the amount of my submissions. I think I've been putting all my eggs in to few baskets of late, so I'm going back to the philosophy I utilized when I first started writing, that of having as many kernels in the frying pan as I can. The theory being that eventually, one will pop.

Currently I have submissions in at: Flash Me Magazine, Brutarian, Murkey Depths, Sinister Tales, Withersin, Uncharted Sky, and Pseudopod. And I hope to send out at least two to three more this weekend. Something has got to pop.

Another interesting thing that has happened recently, is an invitation to submit some stories to a company that produces some edgy audio drama. I don't want to give out to much here in case it doesn't go anywhere, but if something I send them pops, with them, I'll definitely blog about it. It does sound interesting and I'm very intrigued at the possibility of having a full cast audio production of some of my stuff.

I'm still plucking away at my novella and hope to have the first draft done by the end of June. I'm really considering producing this one, or having it produced, as a podcast novel. But first, before I get ahead of myself, I need to finish the damn thing. Then off to the beta readers. Speaking of Beta readers - I need some. Anyone interested please let me know. I need people that have an appreciation for Zom-Com, or at the very least, have a sense of humor.

In the last two weeks I've gotten rejections from Strange Horizon, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and Intergalactic Medical Show. No biggy. Still working on my Zom-Com Novella. Hoping to finish first draft by May, or at least before the Zombie trend goes the way of the housing market.

In the meantime I've put up a Market List of audio markets that other writers might find useful. I spoke via email with Ralan about a month ago regarding the need for an Market List exclusively of Audio Markets, and it was something he wanted to do over at Ralan.com, but for a variety of reasons it just wasn't feasible at the moment. Halloween in July

The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine has just released my short story, Halloween in July. It's an unintentional prequel to the story Pumpkinseeds, which was produced in audio by the Drabblecast in October of 2007. The story was written in a rush as was the requirement - the Dunesteef was selecting scary stories that were written entirely in the month of October - calling this promotion / contest, The October Scary Story Event. I think they selected four from all the submissions, mine being one. So far I've been impressed with their production, and I can honestly say, I don't think there is another podcast like it. With detailed commentary, sometimes longer than the story, and author's notes which reviel some of the inspiration and thoughts behind the fiction. They don't have the audience size of a Drabblecast or an Escape Artist podcast, but I have no doubt, that they soon will.

They did a great job a few months back producing my dark and experimental piece, Framing and Mounting Fairies. Not being a straight narrative it was a tricky story to bring to audio, but they did an outstanding job. This latest episodes has some very entertaining outtakes, something I think they should make a bigger part of the show. Anyway, take a listen, let me know what you think.

Ah, the sweet smell of second place. A swing and a miss. I remember from my years in motor sports marketing that drag racing has this great slogan about second place. Second place is the first Loser! I don't really feel bad, the rejections are personal, but they just seem to be coming in clumps. That's okay, I feel a first place finish coming soon.

That's my old friend Jim Epler back in 2001 at the Sears Craftsman Nationals in Madison, Illinois. He got some bad burns, hands, chest, neck, but he survived this second place finish.

More Rejection

The rejections just keep coming. I received two this Sunday; one from Chizine the leading online horror magazine, and one from Fantasy Magazine. They were both personal rejections which is good, but in the end, they were rejections.

I don't think I've sold anything this year yet and we are already in March. Oh, well. Tomorrow is another day.

Low Impact Parenting

I got a really constructive rejection from Pseudopod on Friday. Two paragraphs of suggestions and some very encouraging words from the assistant editor, Shawn Garrett. Made my day.

On Sunday I had an (Op-Ed) editorial published in the Inland Empire's main newspaper, The Press Enterprise. I originally called the piece Low Impact Parenting, but they changed it to Put Down the Phone and Be a Parent. A little wordy, but probably works better. Rejection

Everybody hates rejection. When someone tells me I have fallen short, I can't help but ask the question - am I good enough? I ask myself every time I see that line - Thank you for thinking of (such and such publication.) Unfortunately we are going to pass.

Form letters are the worst. They mean one of two things. 1) the publisher was to busy (to many submissions) to respond individually or 2) your submission didn't merit anything more than a formulated response. Either way, no rejection feels as empty as a form letter.

But a more personalized rejection can sometimes leave you scratching your head. I got one a few years back from a leading (pro-rate) online horror zine, that said they were rejecting my submission because it was to much like what they publish.

Anyway - I got two rejections this week, the first was a form rejection for a short story for Comet Press's new horror anthology. But the second was from Fantasy Magazine, and Fiction Editor Cat Rambo wrote some encouraging words, saying my submission came very close and I should definitely try them again. A rejection letter like that will probably keep me going for the next six month.

On The Brighter Side - Mounting Fairies

A text version of my story Framing and Mounting Fairies, (first released in audio 11/2008 at the Dunsteef Audio Fiction Magazine) has just been released in the 3rd and final issue of On The Brighter Side. This is an online downloadable PDF publication, that had a very short life, but just one of many small press zines to bite the dust in this dismal economy.

Of the three issue the editors did manage to get out before its demise, I think the 3rd is by far the best. It is, or was, a publication dedicated to the genre of humor, a first for me, as most of my stuff finds its way into speculative anthologies and magazines. Fairy Hunting

My story chronicling the very misguided life of fairy hunter extraordinar, Dr. Morgan Z. Vile, has inspired landscape and portrait artist Mitch Cudney to produce this, probably not Disney approved, image of Tinker Bell. The Dunesteef audio fiction magazine is using Cudney's image as the cover for their fall issue Vol. 1 No. 2.

Like the story, its a bit twisted, but based on the feedback I'm getting, it would seem that's what people like about the story.

So a little dark humor for the holidays seems a nice counterbalance with the sugary sweet warm fuzziness we're joyfully bombarded with this time of year.

Speaking of this time of year, its time to reflect a bit. I finished a novel, nearly completed a novella, had six stories published, had four stories produced in audio and got an editor interested in looking at a collection. Not bad, but as I glance at my goals for 2008 (yes I actually write them out) I'm guessing I achieved about 65-75% of them. Still unattained, is getting something published in Children's, MG or YA. It would be nice to get something published that I could let my kids read. Thus far my writing consists of material I don't ever want my kids to read, as they already think I'm odd enough as a dad. I can't imagine what my 6-year old daughter would think of me if she knew I penned a tale about capturing, killing, and framing the little creatures she has decorating her pink and purple bedroom. So more child friendly goals and stories for 2009. Happy New Year.

The Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine released my short story Framing and Mounting Fairies, yesterday. They did an amazing job with this experimental piece that reads like a How-to guide. Using my bug collecting experience as a kid and my background in How-To manuals to flesh out this twisted piece, I never really realized until listening to it how dark and sinister the tale is. Probably because my original intent was to be funny, I never really fully grasp the underlying darkness of the piece. I'm not really sure if that says something about me or just my writing, either way its an enjoyable piece employing a nice use of sound effects and really well thought out background music. If you enjoyed it let me know.

Dunesteef - The October Scary Story Event

During the month of October, the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine held a writing contest / promotion. I'm not sure if it was a contest or a promotion, but the idea was to write a scary story in the month of October, submit it, and they would pick several to read at a later date. Not sure how many were submitted, but one of the four stories they chose, "Halloween in July," was mine. I wrote it in a rush, and it needs some tweaking, but the Dunesteef editors said it will run next year sometime, so I have some time to edit. It was an interesting writing process. I don't usually write with deadlines, but with a submission cut off of Halloween, I really buckled down - something I should do more often.

I'm currently working on a novella and I've made a goal of having draft one done this year. So with 11,00 words in the can and 10,000 to go, its time to buckle down again. I hope self imposed deadlines will be as effective. We'll see.

The piece is not a straight forward narrative, bit experimental, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what the guys at Dunesteef do with it.

Also I heard from Sniplits and it seems another fantasy story of mine, Fear Factor, is going into production this week. I'm guessing it will be available in the next 3-4 weeks.

And I got a really nice rejection from the editors at Permuted Press for their upcoming anthology, Best New Tales of the Apocalypse. Its a reprint antho for stuff published in 2007. I sent them, Momentum, which was featured on the Drabblecast, episode 23, and after holding it for a second reading they said they really liked it but it just didn't fit with the other stories. I wish all my rejection were that nice.

The Box Born Wraith

Drabblecast released episode 87 on 10/30/08 which featured my story, The Box Born Wraith. It was their Halloween episode and I was proud to be apart of it. There hasn't been a lot of comments thus far in the forum, but what is there is mostly positive. As always Norm Sherman did a great job on the production, and I think its one of the best episodes this year. But I may be biased.

Drabblecast

I just got the word that the drabblecast is going to use my story, "The Box Born Wraith," for this year's Halloween Episode. It was inspired from an experience I had early in the year in which I spent 40 minutes in a MRI machine. For those of you who have not had the displeasure, its a little bit like lying down in a confined space -coffin, sarcophagus, casket -but you can still hear awful things happening around you. Much like I imagine being in one of those morgue drawers without the peace and serenity that might come with actually being dead.

I wrote the piece with audio (and drabblecast) in mind, creating lots of opportunity for creepy sound FX. Should be fun, and will be out probably next Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Anne Stuessy at Sniplits, an audio short story market, just informed me that talent is now being auditioned for my story, "Fear Factor," a fantasy tale about a dragon, tired of being an instrument of death and destruction, who atempts to go against his nature, and wage peace. But finds it easy said than done. Its one of only a few fantasy pieces I've done and it was refreshing to step out of the dark horror genre for a moment.
